An Early September Update

What has the community been up to this September?

It’s September already, summer is ending, children are back at school, and… lots has been happening in Darwin Green! Here are a few things that took place over the last weeks.

Street Play in King’s Court

Contributed by Faith

On Sunday 6 September, families and neighbours came together at King’s Court for a relaxed afternoon of Street Play.

Street Play in King’s Court
Children playing in Yeoman Drive (King's Court)

Children and adults enjoyed giant chess, Connect 4, Jenga and other games and play activities. One of the nicest things about the afternoon was how calm and easy-going it felt. It was lovely to see the green space filled with children playing, families spending time outdoors together, and neighbours stopping for a chat. We saw a lot of happy faces!

Street Play was organised as an opportunity for the wider Darwin Green community to enjoy a shared space differently and create more opportunities for neighbours to meet. It was encouraging to see people of different ages joining in, whether they came specifically for the event or stopped by to see what was happening.

A big thank you to Cambridge City Council for supporting the event and helping to make it possible, and to L&Q for generously providing the games and play equipment enjoyed by families throughout the afternoon.

Thank you as well to everyone who came along, brought their families, helped out or simply stopped to say hello. Community moments can be as simple as that: a few games, an open green space and people willing to come together are enough.

We hope there will be more opportunities like this to play, connect and get to know our neighbours across Darwin Green, King’s Court, or Franklin Gardens.

Mobile Cycle Workshop

One week later, we had the Mobile Cycle Workshop coming to Darwin Green Plaza, along with the ice cream van, and a free football coaching session for children. I hear that many bikes have been checked and fixed!

Coffee van

In other exciting news, we now have a coffee van on the Plaza in the morning! Shaun comes with his Kiwi Coffee van, Wednesdays to Sundays, from 8 am to 2 pm. He sells coffee as well as a selection of cakes. The coffee is great, and the cakes delicious. Come and give it a try!
